A Turkish-flagged cargo ship sank following a collision with a freighter near the entrance to the Bosphorus Strait on the Black Sea side, killing one crew member.

The Turkish General Directorate of Coast Safety reports that the MV Sengul-K collided with the MV Akel near the town of Riva early Wednesday morning, sinking the Akel.

Eight people were rescued, including one injured, and the body of a ninth person was recovered by search and rescue crews a few hours later.

Wednesday incident is the latest for the greater Turkish Straits area. On Monday, a cargo ship allided with a shoreside villa, resulting in severe damage to the house and a few hour closure of the busy Bosphorus Strait.

Earlier this year, a Liberian-flagged tanker ran aground near Istanbul, a cruise ship and a tanker collided in the Dardanelles Strait, and a cargo ship carrying fertilizer ran aground also in the Dardanelles Strait.

Some new photos and video from the Besiktas Shipyard in Turkey show the extent of damage sustained by a handymax tanker following its collision with a cruise ship late last month in the Dardanelles Strait.

As gCaptain reported previously, the Marshall Islands-flagged MT STI Pimlico collided with the Celestyal cruise ship Celestyal Crytal early on June 27th as the vessels were underway in the Dardanelles Strait near Gallipoli, Turkey.

The cruise ship sustained some minor damage to its bow, but as you can see the tanker was badly damaged in the collision, which caused some of the ships flammable naphtha cargo to spill into the water.

No injures were reported among the tanker crew or the the 852 passengers and the 382 crew on board the cruise ship.

Besiktas Shipyard says that scope of repairs will include the replacement of steel, blasting and painting of affected ballast/cargo tanks, renewal of damaged main deck outfitting, electrical systems and piping.

The 38,000 DWT STI Pimlico was built in 2014 and is owned by Scorpio Tankers.
